I’ve been test-driving a new video live-streaming app in recent weeks. It’s called MeVee, and it’s pretty good.
If you’ve heard of Twitter’s Periscope app, it’s like that – using your iOS device you can broadcast video in real-time to a global audience at the push of a button. Pretty powerful stuff when you stop and think about it!
However, MeVee differs from Periscope in a couple of ways.
1. Archived videos
Importantly, MeVee archives your streamed videos (unless you delete them) whereas with Periscope video streams (aka ‘scopes’) are only available for 24 hours after the live stream (although you can use a service such as Katch to archive your broadcast efforts).
2. Partner program
Secondly, (qualified) active users of the platform can join MeVee’s ‘Partner Program’ and receive a cut of revenue generated through advertising. No doubt the goal here is to attract the influencers and ‘power streamers’ into using the app and, hopefully, bringing their audience across from wherever they are broadcasting currently.
Teething problems
While I’ve had a few technical teething problems like getting a strong enough connection to stream (even though I’ve been on wifi or 4G), I have to remember MeVee is still in public beta and there will be issues.
However, I’ve spoken to MeVee’s Chief of Communications Kristen Fletcher (see video interview below) and she tells me there are some big updates and improvements on the way, so keep an eye out for those!
What I am impressed about is the number of views I’m getting per stream (mostly these views are of the archived videos) – you can see some of the stats in the images above (please excuse my blank-looking face in the pics – with MeVee the first frame recorded when you start streaming becomes the ‘placeholder’ image – I’ve got to remember to smile a bit more before hitting the record button!).
If you want to check out my video streams to see how MeVee works, they’re all archived here – http://www.mevee.com/trevoryoung
And if you’re interested to hear a bit more about the back-story of MeVee and what they’ve got coming up – along with a bit of chat about live-streaming generally – don’t forget to watch the short video interview with Kristen.
